Five-thirty meant five o’clock in 49’s time. That was all right. Pike was wide awake with knots in his stomach. He opened the door for 49 to enter. He padded in, directing Pike to pack his sneakers. They were running this morning. His eyes shifted to the table. The gun was lying there in one piece. He picked it up. “Wasn’t expecting you to get this far.”

Pike, toothbrush in his mouth, turned and glanced at 49 holding the gun. He spit. “Got it down to thirty seconds.”

“Taking it apart or putting it together?”

He spit again. “Both.”

“Did you try to dry fire it?”

“Yeah.”

49 placed it back down. “Well?”

“I did okay.”

“Good. Today you wear it on your side. Empty. I’ll keep the clip.”

“All right.”

“What about the gun range? You said I have to start shooting?”

“You do. I have a plan.”

“What’s the plan?”

“Paintball gun.”

“Is that allowed? What about everyone else? Maybe I should just try?”

“No. Small steps, Evans. But I have to say I am impressed you assembled it. Let’s go get something to eat.”

Pike shoved his sneakers in the duffle, slid the gun in place on his belt and grabbed his sweatshirt after seeing 49 wearing one. They headed out. The gun on his side still caused a distraction. He kept looking at it, hanging slightly below his sweatshirt.

49 observed the habit. “It’s okay. You will get used to it. At least you’re not holding it like before.”

Pike realized he wasn’t. “Yeah.” He grinned at progress.

Cory and LaRue were eating at a table.

“Evans!” Cory yelled, waving them over. 49 nodded for him to join them. He gestured toward the food indicating he’d be over after. Clair was in line ahead of them so 49 cut the line to talk with her. She turned her head, staring at Pike, then turned back to say something to 49. He touched her elbow, thanking her, and returned behind Pike, who wanted to know what he’d said. 49 grabbed a tray. “Go sit with your fellas. There is something I need to go over with Morris.”

Pike scooped eggs and a few strips of bacon. “I can sit with you two if you want.”

49 tilted his head with a slight grin. “It’s best I speak with her alone.”

Pike nodded with his head down. “Okay.” He looked down the line, head still down, watching through the tops of his eyelashes as Clair took an empty table a few over from the boys.

He walked by, hoping she would glance up, but no luck. He placed his tray down on the side where he could see her back. 49 took the seat across from her, eyeing Pike watching them. Pike turned his head as Cory said. “Wagner loves cock.”

Pike let his fork touch the plate, stunned by what he’d just heard. “Excuse me?”

LaRue laughed, reaching over to smack Cory’s arm. “See? I told you he’s not rah.”

“What branch Evans?”

“Oh, um, army. Eight years.”

LaRue rolled his eyes, “Aren’t Really Marines Yet.”

“What?”

LaRue grinned. “It’s what we call you toy soldiers.”

Pike looked from guy to guy.
